Timeline: Set right after
“Beginnings” and just before “Confronted”
Summary: Z can’t sleep. Can
Jack take away all her fears?
Note: In my story, Syd
already knew that Z was going to be her roommate.
Here’s a nice
little one-shot fic for you guys! (Hope you like it!)

The room was
dark and the sound of her roommate’s even breathing filled the air. It was
funny how much things could change within twenty-four hours. Just that morning
she had been worried about where she was going to sleep that very night.
Z tossed and
turned in her bed, before finally sitting up. She wasn’t used to sleeping in a
bed all clean and warm. Pulling the blankets aside, she quietly got out of bed,
careful to not wake Syd up in the process. Letting out a sigh of relief as she
made it out the doors, she quickly and quietly padded down the hallway and
stopped just outside Jack’s room.
The yellow
ranger glanced around the empty hallway once more before entering the room.
Once the doors slid shut behind her, she moved over to the bed where Jack laid
sleeping.
“Jack?”
The newly made
red ranger grunted, but did not wake from his slumber.
“Jack!”
Again, there
was no answer.
Her hands went
to Jack’s shoulders and she began shaking him awake. Jack rolled over,
groaning. He opened his eyes and saw Z looming over him. He yawned. “What is it
Z?”
“I can’t
sleep.”
“So you have
to wake up others and watch in satisfaction as they join you in misery?”
Z punched his
arm. “I’m serious.”
The red ranger
gave another yawn. “So am I. Go drink some warm milk.”
“No Jack,” Z
paused, she was beginning to feel silly for waking up her friend in the middle
of the night. “Forget it; I’m sorry I woke you.” She turned to leave, “Go back
to sleep.”
Suddenly Jack
was wide awake. “No wait, I’m sorry. I was being insensitive. Come here.” The
Red ranger opened his arms and Z headed back towards the bed and leaned into
Jack’s embrace.
“What’s wrong
Z?”
There was a
moment of silence before the yellow ranger voiced her fears. “What if we fail
Jack?”
“We won’t.”
His voice was gentle but firm.
She couldn’t
seem to stop. Once she had voiced her fears out loud, they just kept coming.
“But how do you know that Jack? I don’t know if we’re good enough to be here. I
mean, look at Sky! He’s the top Cadet at the Academy! And Syd- she’s
accomplished so much in her life, and she’s a really skilled fighter. And
Bridge? He’s a genius!”
Jack wrapped
his arms tighter around his longtime friend. “Z, I promise we’re not going to give
up without a fight. We’re never going back to those streets Z, not if I can
help it.”
The yellow
ranger remained silent as Jack continued. “We may not have top scores like Sky,
or skills like Syd, or the smarts like Bridge, but Commander Cruger chose us.
And we’re going to stay on this team Z.” After hearing the determination in his
voice, Z believed him. Jack would make sure they never go back to the streets.
“I promise. We’ll work hard and prove ourselves.”
Z nodded and
yawned. Sleep was starting to come easily now that her fears had been laid to
rest. The yellow ranger felt a soft smile come to her face as she drifted off
to sleep.
Jack watched
her for a moment before whispering, “I promise I’ll protect you Z.” Settling
himself under the covers once more, he vowed that he would do whatever it took
for Z to have a good life. He owed her that much. With that thought in mind, he
fell asleep.

A/N: I actually had this
story typed up right after I saw Confronted. But due to my computer crashing, I
thought I had lost it. But I guess not, because I just found it sitting nicely
in my documents! Hopefully you enjoy this story everyone!
